Ronald Simms, Jr.

Ronald Simms, Jr. is a native of Richmond, VA who is currently in his eighth season as head bowling coach of Virginia State University. Ronald is married and is the father of three children.  They also have four grandchildren.

In his first season as head bowling coach, Ronald Simms, Jr. guided his Trojans bowling squad to a second place finish at the 2012 CIAA Bowling Championships in Raleigh, NC.  Since that time, the Trojans have finished in the top 3 in the conference each year, including winning the CIAA Conference Championship in 2014.  That same year the Trojans also claimed the Highest Team GPA award in the CIAA conference.  Each year, he has had many student athletes be named to the All-Conference Team including twice having the CIAA Conference Player of the Year (Rebecca Clements and Ariel Haith).  One of his former student-athletes, Charity Bickcom, was named Women’s Student Athlete of the Year at Virginia State University in 2017.

Over his 30+ years of participating in the sport of bowling, Ronald has been very active on and off the lanes. Prior to coming to VSU, Ronald Simms, Jr. has held many roles as a President, Vice President, Secretary, and as a Tournament Director in the sport of bowling.  He served as President for the Greater Richmond Bowling Senate of The National Bowling Association for many years. Coach Simms was inducted into both the Greater Richmond Bowling Senate of the TNBA Hall of Fame in 2011 and in the Greater Richmond United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 2015.

Coach Simms is a former Election Chairperson for The National Bowling Association (2008-2012), a member of the Policy and Procedures Committee and Budget Committee of The National Bowling Association.  Coach Simms has been a staff member of Hammer Bowling (2007 – present) and Logo Infusion Apparel (2017 – present). In 2007 and 2012, Coach Simms placed first in the doubles event of the TNBA National Championship Tournament held in Louisville, KY and in Indianapolis, IN.  He has bowled (28) 300 games and (6) 800 series in his career.  Also on March 21, 2017 in New Castle, DE, he and his doubles partner, Reneece Porter, had the second highest doubles game in the nation for the 2016-2017 season of a 588 (Coach Simms, 300 – Reneece Porter, 288).  They also recorded the highest series in the nation for the 2016-2017 season of a 1575 (Coach Simms, 838 series – Reneece Porter, 737 series).

Aside from his accomplishment on and off the lanes, he believes a lot of life lessons are learned being a member of a team. Lessons he believes his teams will learn and use not only in producing winning teams for years to come but, most importantly, in life. Together, with God, VSU Trojans Bowling team can do all things.  We are VSU BOWLING!
