Jameshia Smith was selected as the Head Coach of the the Virginia State University Softball team in 2022 and the 2025 season will mark her fourth season at the helm.
In her first season at the helm, Coach Smith led the Trojans to the best record the team has had since the 2014 season as they went 20-13 with a 13-4 conference record. That 2022 team ranked 10th in the nation (Led Conference) in batting average (.352), 12th in doubles per game (1.88), 35th in on-base percentage (Led Conference) (.393), 21st in scoring (Second in Conference) (6.48), 18th in slugging percentage (Led Conference) (.518) 17th in triples (Led Conference) (19) and third in triples per game (Led Conference) (.58). The Trojans ranked third in ERA (3.75), second in hits (213), second in runs (128), second in earned runs (95), second in walks allowed (50) and third in opponents batting average (.285) Of the 10 players on the team, six players average a .300 batting average or better. Coach Smith had five players receive all-conference and had one on the D2CCA First Team.
In 2023, Coach Smith guided the Trojans to a 10-6 record in conference action and advanced to the semifinals of the CIAA Softball Championship. Four players batted over .300 and three players batted over .350. As a team, Virginia State batted .300, fourth in the conference. Three Trojans received all-conference honors, including one second teamer and two all-rookie selections.
In the 2024 season the Trojans finished with a 25-5 record and 15-1 conference record which was best in the Northern division and conference. She coached the player of the year , Hailey Darrington, Pitcher of the Year Kara Green and Rookie of the Year Mylia Knight. In total four Trojans earned First Team ALL-CIAA, one second teamer and one on the all rookie team. In the CIAA tournament the Trojans made it all the way to the Semifinals before losing its third game of the day to Claflin University. Four different players hit of .400 and as a team hit .357. All three of the Trojans pitchers held ERA's under 3 with Jaya Diggs-Hagwood having a 1.35 ERA in 46.2 innings pitched. Darrington was also a NCAA Division II statistical leader scoring 1.6 runs per game. Both Darrington and Diggs-Hagwood were second team NFCA and D2CSC All-Region Players
