Coach La Verne Burrus-Johnson officially joined the Virginia State Woo Woo Cheerleading Coaching Staff for this season. However, she has supported the Woo Woos on special occasions throughout the years, helping to maintain the legacy of the world-renowned Woo-Woo Cheerleaders.
From 1994 to 1997, Coach La Verne was a proud member of the VSU Woo Woo Cheerleaders, where she built lifelong bonds with her Woo-Woo Sisters. In 2024, she and three of her spirit sisters gained national attention after recreating an iconic cheerleading photo from 28 years prior. Their story was featured on major media outlets, including Essence and popular HBCU platforms, bringing positive publicity to Virginia State University and reinforcing that “Greater Happens Here” —a greatness that has been maintained throughout the years.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Virginia State University, a Master of Business Administration from Texas Woman’s University and is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Education from Virginia State University.
Coach La Verne brings over 25 years of experience in audit, risk management, and internal controls. She currently serves as an Audit Leader, overseeing comprehensive audit functions
and improving internal controls. She is also the owner of her own dance fitness company, a licensed Zumba instructor and a certified group fitness instructor. She has created and led several large-scale dance fitness events and cheerleading/dance camps. Additionally, she served three years as Assistant Cheerleading Coach for the Glen Allen Parks and Recreation Ravens. Her signature events, Dance for Your Heart and RVA FitFest, have collectively raised thousands of dollars for local charities and scholarships while encouraging community participation and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Coach La Verne is excited to return to the sidelines and help the next generation of Woo Woos excel both on and off the field while preserving the rich legacy of the Virginia State University Woo Woo Cheerleading program.
