Virginia State falls 67-52 to Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem, N.C.--The Virginia State women's basketball team got a 35-point performance from the bench, but fell 67-52 to the Winston-Salem Rams on the road Tuesday.

Kendahl Spearman led the Trojans (10-4, 4-2) with 15 points. Michaela Lane tacked on two points, nine rebounds and four blocks and Skylar White chipped in as well with five points off of the bench.

Virginia State out-rebounded Winston-Salem 39-35 in Tuesday's game, led by Lane's nine boards. The Trojans also collected 10 offensive rebounds and scored 12 second chance points.

Virginia State's defense held Winston-Salem to only 36.5 percent shooting from the field, including 28.6 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

Virginia State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The Trojans continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 30-20 halftime deficit.

Winston-Salem continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 44-32 advantage before Virginia State went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Shayla Wyatt, to trim its deficit to 44-40 with 51 seconds to go in the third. Winston-Salem countered and stretched its lead to 46-40 heading into the fourth. Virginia State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.

Virginia State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 67-52. Virginia State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
