Strong Start and Consistent Play Propel Virginia State to a Win Over Bowie State
Â
Bowie, MD- Virginia State University (VSU) came out strong, jumping to an early lead in their matchup against Bowie State University (BSU), dominating throughout the game to secure a 75-52 victory.
The Trojans wasted no time, with Mihjae Hayes opening the game with a fast-break layup and Tiyanna James following up with another layup, quickly putting Virginia State in the driver's seat. Bowie State's Destiny Ryles kept her team in the game early with key shots, including a 3-pointer and a jumper, allowing the Bulldogs to stay within striking distance.
As the game unfolded, Hayes continued to contribute across the board for VSU, making steals, handing out assists, and knocking down free throws. Her all-around performance helped the Trojans extend their lead to 16-13 by the end of the first quarter, following a pair of successful free throws with 1:33 left on the clock.
Bowie State, though struggling with turnovers and missed shots, had its moments. Mia Smith and Beulah Odiong contributed points when they could, but the Bulldogs could not get past Virginia State's consistent offensive play and tough defense. Ryles kept battling, grabbing key rebounds and trying to rally her team.
The Trojans began to pull away in the second quarter, with Amesha Miller adding a fast-break layup and Kenndahl Spearman hitting a jumper to push the lead further. Despite solid defensive plays from Neresha Miller and Gabriella Clary, the Bulldogs couldn't manage to capitalize on offense. Shelby Ricks did her best to keep Bowie State in the game, hitting a layup and free throw in the closing seconds of the half, but Virginia State held a 30-21 advantage at the break.
The second half began with Virginia State asserting their dominance, quickly increasing their lead to 35-21. Carmen Kweti provided offensive support in the paint, while Anii Harris created fast-break opportunities, fueling the Trojans' offense.
Bowie State continued to fight, with a few layups and free throws, but could not break through the VSU defense. Virginia State's defense capitalized on the Bulldogs' turnovers, converting them into points and maintaining control throughout the second half. Despite some late-game efforts from BSU, the Trojans' strong offensive and defensive play was too much to overcome.
The game ended with Virginia State securing a comfortable 75-52 win, improving their performance across the floor.Â
The Trojans will head back on the road against the Panthers of Virginia Union on Saturday, Feb 22, at 2 pm. Â
