The game got off to a slow start with both teams struggling to find offensive rhythm. A series of early turnovers and missed shots defined the opening minutes, but Nyshea Weaver of IUP was quick to capitalize on a fast-break layup to give her team the early lead. Virginia State responded quickly, as Ani Harris converted a layup of her own, tying the game at 2-2.
As the first quarter progressed, both teams exchanged baskets in a tight, back-and-forth affair. Amesha Miller and KenDahl Spearman kept Virginia State within striking distance with strong plays in the paint, while Janeira Scott and Weaver answered for IUP with mid-range jumpers and key rebounds.
IUP appeared to be gaining control midway through the first half, extending their lead to 20-10 with a strong series of plays from Weaver and Shamia Strayhorn. However, Virginia State wasn't about to let the game slip away. KenDahl Spearman knocked down a jumper, and Ani Harris added a fast-break layup, cutting the lead to just five points with under three minutes remaining in the half. Virginia State's defense also forced several turnovers, allowing them to stay within reach despite struggling with their shooting.
The second half opened with increased intensity as both teams ramped up their defensive pressure. Virginia State came out strong, with Miller scoring back-to-back baskets in the paint to give the Trojans their first lead of the game at 33-30. IUP responded quickly, as Spearman converted a key layup and Strayhorn followed with a clutch jumper, putting the Crimson Hawks back in front.
With both teams trading baskets and playing physical defense, the game became increasingly tense. At the 5-minute mark, IUP managed to break free with a couple of key free throws and a jump shot from Spearman that pushed the lead to 38-30. However, Virginia State continued to apply pressure, cutting the lead back down to just five points after a crucial layup from Harris.
With under two minutes remaining, the game was still very much up for grabs. Virginia State had opportunities to close the gap, but a series of missed shots and turnovers proved costly. As the Trojans pressed to catch up, IUP maintained their composure at the free-throw line. Shamia Strayhorn and Spearman each made crucial free throws in the closing moments to extend IUP's lead, while Harris of Virginia State did her best to keep her team in the game with key buckets.
The Trojans' hopes were dashed in the final seconds as IUP's defense tightened, preventing Virginia State from getting any clean looks at the basket. Despite a late layup from Harris to make it 62-54, Indiana (PA) held on for the victory, thanks to their strong defensive effort and timely execution down the stretch.
