Virginia State puts up 45 points in dismantling of Big Blue

Bluefield, W. Va. (Oct. 26, 2024)- The Virginia State University football team only allowed 182 yards while putting up over 500 yards of offense against the Bluefield State Big Blue in a 45-6 win.

The Trojans kicked off to start the game and Bluefield State managed to put together their best drive of the game getting all the way to the VSU 24-yard line. KJ McNeil had a huge qb hurry to cause an incomplete pass. With the Trojan offense on the field, it only took them two plays to get an explosive 56 yard run from Jimmyll Williams. However VSU had to settle for a field goal from Joshua Campbell to go up 3-0. The Big Blue wouldn't score with their next drive and the Trojans would again use big plays from both Romelo Williams, Tylique Ray and Malik Hunter to score a touchdown.

Another punt from the Big Blue gave VSU the ball at their own 29 yard line and R. Williams only needed one play to find Kevin Gayles on a 71-yard catch and run touchdown making it 17-0. On the Trojans next drive Brandon Rose on his first touch of the game ran it in for an 18-yard touchdown. The Big Blue would then throw an interception to Kymon Pope to set up the offense in plus territory. Then on the sixth play of the drive Ray would get into the endzone this time making it 31-0. Bluefield State would get on the board before the end of the half put had trouble on the PAT resulting in only getting six before halftime.

After their opening drive ended with a blocked field goal the Trojan stood up the Big Blue and had a five-play drive that ended with a 33-yard catch and run touchdown by Hunter, for his second of the game.  The final score had a pair of first for the Trojans as both Jakari Joyce and Carlos Poole scored their first touchdowns of the years with a 19-yard touchdown catch. As a team the Trojans had 27 first downs compared to only 9 for Bluefield State.

With the win VSU is now 5-3 overall and 4-1 in conference while the Big Blue drop to 1-7 and 0-5 in conference. The Trojans end their road games next week on November 2 against Lincoln University at 1 p.m.
