Ettrick, Va.- The Virginia State University (7-0, 5-0 CIAA) football team hosted Bluefield State (1-6, 0-5 CIAA) for its homecoming game and emerged victorious 39-23.Â
After stopping the Big Blue on their first drive, the Trojans took the field on the BSU 31-yard line. After Jordan Davis completed his first two passes to Roy Jackson III the run game took over. Kimo Clarke capped off the drive with a four-yard touchdown run to make the score 6-0.Â
VSU would score on its second drive as well with Davis scoring on a one-yard touchdown run. The first play of the drive was a 41-yard pass from Davis to Jackson. Bluefield State would answer on their next drive with a methodical drive that chewed four minutes off the clock.Â
After the first quarter both defenses toughened up as no one would score until VSU got the ball with a minute and 20 seconds until halftime. Jackson would return the punt back into Bluefield State territory and left the Trojans with a short field. After a six-yard run from Clarke, Davis would find Jackson and he would get tackled down at the four. Clarke would then punch it in for his second touchdown of the day. Then just before halftime Willie Drew would intercept the pass.Â
Coming out of halftime BSU would score on a safety after the punt for VSU would be sent out of the endzone. However, VSU would answer with a touchdown pass to Tayshaun Porter from Davis to cap off a five-play drive making the score 26-9.Â
The Bluefield State special teams would make themselves known again as they were able to block a punt from the Trojans and recovered in the endzone to cut the deficit to 11 points. VSU would get the ball first to start the fourth quarter. The Trojans would take four minutes off the clock and drive down the field with a nine-play drive that was capped off with a Davis touchdown run, his second rushing touchdown of the game. Â Â
Davis added his second touchdown pass on the second to last drive for VSU as he found Kevin Gayles in the back of the endzone. Gayles was able to control the ball after a quick bobble and was able to hold on in the endzone for the last VSU score of homecoming.Â
The Trojans outgained the Big Blue 343-232 total yards and went a perfect 6-6 in redzone opportunities. Drew would finish the game with two interceptions and four pass break-ups. VSU will stay at home next Saturday as they welcome Elizabth City State University with the start time scheduled for 2:00 p.m.Â
