ETTRICK, VA (January 14, 2023)- The VSU women's basketball team move to an 8-8 overall record, 4-3 in the CIAA, after taking a 59-49 win over the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University at the 2023 Freedom Classic Festival.
First Half
VUU did not hesitate to open the contest with a shot from behind the arc, just seconds into the game. VSU's
Sommer Blakemore answered back with a 3-pointer to jump start the Trojans momentum. VSU worked to hold the lead, but the 1
st quarter saw 2 ties and 4 lead changes before the end of the quarter ruled in favor of the Trojans, 15-14.
Majority of the 2
nd quarter was dominated by the Lady Panthers, until the final 2:00 of the half saw a 28-all score thanks to Blakemore. The Trojans managed to get back in the game to retie the score at halftime, 30-all.
Second Half
The score remained close, but the VSU found and kept an edge to take a 44-41 lead at the end of the 3
rd quarter. The Trojans kicked their game into high gear in the final quarter extending the scoring gap to double-digits and eventually take a 59-49 win.
Leaders
Kylah Webb controlled the game with a season high double-double (18 points and 11 rebounds).
Sommer Blakemore was not too far behind with 16 points and leading the game with 3 steals.
Kalyn Ervin stepped in to lead the game with 5 assists.
Up Next
The Trojans will travel to Raleigh, NC on Wednesday, January 18 to take on the Lady Bears of Shaw University. The CIAA matchup is set for 5:30pm.
