VSU Athletics Host First Annual Trojan Choice Awards

ETTRICK, VA - The Virginia State University Athletics Department hosted its first annual Trojan Choice Awards Ceremony, Monday night at Gateway dining and event center.
 
The event unofficially marks the conclusion of the 2021-22 athletic season, which recognizes and honors the success of the VSU student-athletes on and off the playing field or court.
 
Each athletic program presented its annual team awards during the ceremony. In addition, the athletic department also announced the recipients of several special awards.
 
The Student-Athlete of the Year Award, is presented to both a female and male who has excelled on and off the field or court. The recipients were Samantha Cunningham of the women's softball program and Nicholas Woolfolk of the men's football and baseball team.

Samantha Cunningham leads the team in six hitting different categories and is nationally ranked within the top-10 in batting average and on-base percentage.Cunningham earned CIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors after going 13-18  (722/batting avg.) in the CIAA Round-Up. Her best game came against JCSU went 4-4 and scored three runs with an RBI. Being the veteran of the team, Samantha Cunningam has been a consistent vocal leader for her squad while also leading by example with clutch plays in the field and in the better's box. Cunningham was also named to the All-Academic team as well!

Nicholas Woolfolk currently leads the baseball team with 60.1 innings pitched and wins with five while maintaining a 3.13 Earned Run Average. He bats .323 from the plate and hit first career homerun this season against Mid – Atlantic Christian. He was also instrumental in the recent no-hitter against Bluefield State College. A two-sport athlete, Nicholas Woolfolk, doubled as the VSU starting kicker in which he was second in the conference going 7-9 on field goal attempts and 4-of-5 in field goals between the 30-39 yard line. He averaged 60+ yards per kickoff with four touchbacks. Woolfolk was the unsung hero in the homecoming game against Lincoln (Pa.) where he went 3-of-3 in field goals (33,31,32) and 2-of-2 in PATs. Woolfolk was also named to the All-Academic team as well.  

The volleyball team was the recipient of the team highest GPA award. Kayla Taylor, a member of the volleyball team, received the student-athlete highest GPA award. The baseball team was the recipient of the community service award.
