Trojans Split the Day with LHU

ETTRICK, VA  – The Trojans were able to beat Lock Haven for the first time ever in game one of the day but was shut out in the second game of the day. VSU edged the Bald Eagles in game one, 3-2, but was shut out, 3-0, in the second game.



Game 1
The bottom of the first inning started off with Ricky Jones earning the first hit of the ball game as he singled to advance Tahraun Hammond to scoring position but the Trojans were unable to take advantage. LHU was able to get a runner on third base in the top of the second inning but Nicholas Woolfolk came up with a huge strike out to keep the visitors scoreless. After a scoreless inning and a half, David Johnson led off the bottom of the third inning with single. Hammond would follow-up with a hit of his own. Chase Moore would then draw a walk to load the base paths. Ricky Jones drove in Johnson on a single to make the score, 1-0, in the bottom of the third inning. After another scoreless inning, the Bald Eagles were able to score off a VSU error to push the score to, 1-1. LHU would go on to hit a single to drive home their second run of the inning, to make the score, 2-1, in the top of the fifth inning. Hammond would start the bottom of the fifth inning drawing a walk. Then the Bald Eagles would go on to make a business decision to intentionally walk Jones. Emmett Jefferson would clear the bases with a double that allowed Jones and Hammond to score to make the score 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The VSU defense would stand strong, as they were able to hold the Bald Eagles scoreless through the final inning and a half to take the victory, 3-2.

Game 2
The Bald Eagles got off to a hot start in game two as the visitors got on the board early due to a balk. LHU would go on to score their second run of the inning with a single to make the score, 2-0, in the top of the first inning. Despite loading the bases with only one out, the Trojans would fail to bring home a run to leave the score at, 2-0. In the bottom of the third inning, Ricky Jones add yet another hit to his total for the day, which advanced Johnson to second base. The Trojans would then hit back-to-back pop flies to end the inning at, 2-0, yet again in the bottom of the third inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Miles Burton was able to gun down a LHU runner on his way to third base which ultimately allowed them to hold the lead at, 2-0. The top of the sixth inning saw the Bald Eagles draw a bases loaded walk to extend their lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. After LHU posted a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom the seventh inning, the Bald Eagles would take the game two, 3-0.

Virginia State will be right back in front of the home crowd on Saturday, February 19 for a doubleheader against Lincoln University (Pa.). First pitch for the first game is set for 1:00 p.m. while game two's first pitch will be thrown at 3:00 p.m.
