ETTRICK, VA – Virginia State women's basketball team dropped their third-straight game to Elizabeth City State, 65-59. Despite playing well defensively forcing 14 turnovers and nine steals, the Trojans did not play well enough on the offensive end to get the win. The loss drops their conference record down to 5-6.
Natalia Leaks posted a game-high 16 points along with six rebounds and a steal while knocking down all four of her free throws.
Kaaliya Williams was right behind Leaks with 15 points prior to fouling out of the game.
Valerie Samuel posted her 10
th game with five or more assists as the guard scored seven points along with five assists.
Sommer Blakemore went 3-of-4 from the field, which led to eight points. The Trojans grabbed 12 offensive boards, which led to 13 second chance points.
How It Happened
- After the Vikings took an early 7-2 lead, the Trojans would go on to tie the game at 9 all with 6:11 left to go in the first quarter.
- ECSU went on a 6-0 run to bring the score to 15-9. The Vikings took a 20-13 into the second quarter.
- The Trojans brought the ECSU lead down to three with a three-pointer from Jeane' Robinson. The Vikings would then extend their lead to 27-19 with 6:25 left in the half.
- As VSU would attempt to cut the lead back down to a single possession, the Vikings would keep the Trojans at a comfortable distance at 31-24 at the half.
- Natalia Leaks (6) and Kaaliya Williams (7) combined for 15 points in the first half while Valerie Samuel had four points along with three assists. The Trojans held ECSU to a 27% field goal percentage and a 25% three-point percentage. On the flip side, the Vikings drew 12 fouls and went 15-of16 from the foul line.
- With 5:36 left to go in the third quarter, the Vikings took a, 41-28, lead which was their largest lead of the game to that point.
- A three-pointer from Sommer Blakemore brought the lead down to seven at, 45-38, headed into the final quarter of play.
- The Trojans would cut the lead down to five points twice thanks the three pointers from Kaaliya Williams and Sommer Blakemore to make the score, 53-48, with 4:36 left in the game.
- After all the Trojans comeback attempts were continuously spoiled, the Vikings would go on to close the game out, 65-59.
