Trojans Win Big Over Vikings, 35-7

Despite giving up more than 100 yards in penalties, the VSU offense gained 459 yards against ESCU

ETTRICK, VA – Virginia State University gets their second win in conference play against Elizabeth City State University. The VSU defense earned their third second half shutout on the year Saturday evening.

How It Happened
  • The start of the twelfth matchup between the Vikings and Trojans was not ideal for VSU as Kaezahn Johnson picked off D'Vonte Waller on the opening drive.
  •  After a scoreless first quarter, D'Vonte Waller and Darius Hagans hooked up on a well-designed screen-play that sprung Hagans into open field for the touchdown of 57 yards. The score put the Trojans on top 7-0 in the beginning of the first quarter.
  • Following a stalled drive from Virginia State, Brandon Flint blocked a Jesus Valenzuela punt which, set them up on the VSU 27 yard line.
  • Kevin Caldwell would take advantage of the short field connecting on a nine-yard pass to Cameron Saunders on fourth and goal. This knotted the score at 7-7 late in the second quarter.
 
  • The score was tied at seven a piece heading into half time.
 
  • The Trojan offense meant business coming out of the half with an 8-play, 60-yard scoring drive. Jordan Davis came off the bench hot going 3-3 with 44 yards through the air as he hit Demetrius Strickland down the sideline to make the score 14-7 midway through the third quarter.
  • The Trojans would gain full control of the game as Javon Burks crushed Kevin Caldwell in the backfield. The fumble recovered by Javon Frazier allowed the VSU offense set up shop their own 36 yard line.
  • A steady dose of Darius Hagans wore down the defense of ECSU as Hagans pushed his way into the end zone from a yard away. The second touchdown of the day for Hagans made the score 21-7 in the final seconds of the third quarter. 
  • Jevon LaPierre caught a pass from Davis that went 51 yards down to the 15 yard line of ECSU. Three plays later, Kimo Clarke scored from two yards away to push the lead out to 28-7 at the start of the fourth quarter.
  • The VSU defense forced a turnover-on-downs as Zion Johnson was able to stop Melvin Smalls, Jr short of the line to gain to give the Trojan offense the ball on the ESCU 45 yard line.  
  • Jordan Davis was able to find Andre Jackson on a back-shoulder pass down the left sideline for the final score of the game. The 38-yard touchdown pass gave the Trojans a commanding 35-7 lead over the Vikings late in the 4th quarter.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The Trojan defensive front seven had their best game of the year as they completely dominated the line-of-scrimmage allowing negative six yards on the ground. 
  • The Trojan defense amassed 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage in the conference matchup.
  • This marks the third second half shutout on the year for the Trojan defense.
  • The ECSU offense converted just 3-of-14 third downs in the Saturday evening game.
  • Javon Burks collected the most tackle-for-loss plays in the contest with 3.5 and a forced fumble. Kolby Hunter also had a pair along with, Javon Frazier with three and Ty'Quez Scott with one.
  • Zion Johnson gathered a team-high 12 tackles for the second time in the season.
  • The VSU offense gained their confidence back as the group gained 459 yards and five touchdowns.
  • The Trojan offensive line gave up only one sack against a lively ECSU defensive line.
  • Eleven different players of the VSU offense had a catch as the group averaged 9.8 yards per grab against the secondary of ECSU.
  • Darius Hagans found his footing against the Vikings defense as he led the team in rushing yards (58) and receiving yards (59) posting two total touchdowns (one rushing, one passing) on the evening.
  • Jordan Davis gained 194 total yards while completing over 70% of his passes as he tossed two touchdowns in only a half of play.
  • Nicholas Woolfolk went 5-5 in extra point attempts in the contest

The Trojans will be on the road to Bowie, Maryland for a matchup against the Bulldogs of Bowie State University.
