WILSON, NC (February 25, 2020) - The Virginia State University baseball team suffered a 12-8 loss to the Bulldogs of Barton on Tuesday evening. The loss moves the Trojans to a 7-9 overall record.
The Game
Not wasting any time, VSU got on the board with 4 runs in the opening inning. Despite having 2 outs, Kevin Russell jump started the Trojans scoring with an unearned run, followed by Keyon Smith who secured an unearned run off of a throw to third base. Miles Burton collected the first RBI's of the game by bringing Delmarcus Tally and Joshua Tayman home.
At the end of the first inning the Trojans held a 4-0 lead. With a scoreless second inning, VSU held strong to their lead. Smith is 2-for-2 this season after hitting a homer to right field at the top of the 3rd inning. Burton moved VSU ahead with another run for a 6-0 lead.
Despite Barton gaining 4 runs at the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Trojans advanced Smith and Talley home for an 8-4 lead. Unfortunately, VSU could not hold strong to their lead as he Bulldogs gained 8 additional runs. The Trojans suffered a 12-8 road loss to Barton.
After pitching the initial 3.2 innings, Andrew Riddick took the loss VSU.
Leaders
Keyon Smith led the charge for the Trojans with 3 runs, followed by Delmarcus Talley with 2. Kevin Russell, Joshua Tayman and Miles Burton each chipped in a single run. Burton controlled the RBIs for VSU with 3, while Smith, Jeremiah Hardy and Cecil Henderson each gained a single RBI.

Up Next
The VSU baseball team will face the Panthers of Clark Atlanta University on March 6-7 for 3 game weekend series. The first pitch is set for 1pm.
