ETTRICK, VA (January 18, 2020)- The Virginia State University women's basketball team took a 61-47 loss to the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University for the 2020 Freedom Classic Festival.
The Trojans are 8-11 on the season, 5-2 in the conference, and 0-1 in the Northern Division.
First Quarter
The intensity of the game was apparent early with the visitors securing the first shot of the game. The Trojans answered back with layup by
Chiqueria Cook.
VUU went on an 8-0 run, putting VSU at a disadvantage. Cook and
Tajah Clark broke the Trojans scoring drought with free throws, bring the score to 11-5.
Shalyn Washington checked into the game for the Trojans with a shot from the perimeter, closing the scoring gap.
At the end of the quarter, the Trojans trailed the Lady Panthers, 15-8.
Second Quarter
Although the Lady Panthers opened the quarter with a 3-point shot, the Trojans battled to stay in the game.
Hopson gave VSU their first shot of the quarter with a jumper. At the first charged timeout of the quarter, the Trojans trailed with a score of 24-10.
Va Draunidalo broke the Lady Panther's run, with a three point play in favor of the Trojans.
Going into halftime, the Trojans were short of a lead, 32-15.
Third Quarter
Hopson did not waste any time, putting up a shot from the perimeter to start the half. Cook followed through with a layup to close the scoring gap, 32-20.
Despite VUU gaining points at the line, Washington answered back with a shot from behind the arc. With 4:07 left in the quarter, the score was in favor of the visitors, 38-23. Washington kept the game moving for VSU, with another 3-pointer, followed by
Brianna Jones with second chance shot.
The quarter ended with a score of 43-28 in favor of the Lady Panthers.
Fourth Quarter
Although VUU went on an early run to open the quarter, the Trojans defensive battled to gain control.
Baskets by Draunidalo and Cook moved the Trojans closer to closing the gap. Hopson elevated the action with a shot from behind the arc followed by needed free throws, but the efforts were not enough.
After attempting to bounce back, the Trojans fell short of a win.
Leaders
Autumn Hopson led the way for the Trojans with 11 points, while
Chiqueria Cook secured 6 rebounds.
Up Next
The VSU women's basketball team will travel to Fayetteville, NC to take on the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University on January 22. Tipoff is set for 5:30pm.
