Virginia State Shows Grit in 22-19 Loss to Robert Morris

MOONS TOWNSHIP, Pa. A 15-point fourth quarter doomed the Virginia State University football team as the Trojans (0-2) were handed their second loss of the 2018 season in a 22-19 defeat at Division I (FCS) Robert Morris University Saturday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium.

 

Junior quarterback Cordelral Cook (Atlanta, Ga.) accounted for one touchdown run as he threw for 180 yards on 18-of-26 pass completions. Senior wide receiver Joshua Harris (King William, Va.) had 89 yards on seven receptions.

Defensively, the Trojans were led by senior Kurtis Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) who finished with nine tackles, one interception and one break up while junior William Adams (Henrico, Va.) contributed seven tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss and one breakup.

 

Virginia State's quarterback Cordelral Cook (Atlanta, Ga.) moved the chain for 10-plays and securing a one yard touchdown run at the 13:31 mark in the second quarter to take a 6-0 lead. The Colonials then scored a touchdown on a one yard run from Mathew Barr and a PAT to go ahead 7-6 heading into the third quarter.

 

The third quarter favored Virginia State where VSU scored another touchdown on a seven yard run from Demetrius Strickland (Hampton, Va.) to take a 12-7 edge. A strong defensive performance by the Trojans held the Colonials scoreless in the quarter.

Heading into the final quarter, the Trojans added its final points of the contest at the 9:43 mark with Adonte Braxton (Greenville, N.C.) fumble recovery to grow its lead 19-7. The Colonials then added seven points at the 8:40 mark to cut the Trojans lead 19-14. With 7:22 left in the contest, RMU responded with 12 yard pass from Jimmy Walker to Robinson that would ultimately put the game away for the Trojans.


For the contest, Virginia State outgained the Colonials, 444-303 yards, including a 264-78 edge on the ground. The Trojans had a total of 12 penalties that cost them 95 yards and were 6-for-18 on third down conversions.

 

The Colonials were led by Walker with 205 yards on 9-21 pass completions and two touchdowns while Matthew Gonzalez recorded 113 yards on four receptions and a score, followed by Terence Stephens with 49 yards on 11 carries.

 

Virginia State University will return to action next week, as they travel to face CIAA opponent St. Augustine's University. Kickoff is slated for 1 pm on Saturday, September 15 at George Williams Athletics Complex.
