Virginia State University sent eight student-athletes to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, AL and the Trojans returned with ten All-American trophies and a National Champion in the women's 400m dash.
 
Sprinter Samantha Edwards won her first national title by winning the 400m dash with a time of 53.52 seconds. Edwards later ran in the 200m dash and finished 8^th overall with a time of 25.33 seconds claiming her second All-American trophy of the championship. Capping off a monumental experience for Edwards, she anchored the women's 4x400m relay team that collected more accolades. Edwards will end her athletic career with a total of 10 NCAA All American Trophies and a National title.
 
The Trojans Women's 4x400m relay team of Alicia Terry, Jovonne Tyson-King, Taylor-Ashley Bean, and Samantha Edwards finished 7^th in their event with their fastest time of the year of 3:46.42. All four received All-American honors; this was the second All American accolade for Tyson-King as she and Edwards ran on the women's 4x400m relay in 2011; and the first for sophomores Terry and Bean. Head coach Jason-Lamont Jackson stated, “These talented sophomores have bolstered VSU's women's program in a great way and will continue to lead them in the future years.”
 
The Trojans men's 4x400m relay team of Te'Shad Chambers, Clive Cameron, Daniel Ross, and Prince Owusu-Mensah placed 8^th with their fastest time of the year; 3:14.18. All four received All-American honors. This is Daniel Ross second All-American award as he received his first during last year's outdoor season; and the first for Chambers, Cameron, and Owusu-Mensah. “Ross has been a main stay on the 4x400m relay since my first year, he has done an incredible job of sticking with it and helping lead the relay to this day,” offered Coach Jackson.
 
Head Coach Jason-Lamont Jackson also stated “Coming into the NCAA it's hard not to let emotions get to you, as a coach you hope you've crossed your T's and dotted your I's; you think back to the beginning of the season and all of the hard work the student-athletes and staff have put in – then you sit back and become a spectator.  We had four student-athletes who had been to a national meet before and four who had not.  I think we did a tremendous job of keeping our eyes on the prize and executing exactly what we wanted to do.  It's a feeling like no other when you set out to accomplish a goal and you attain it…I couldn't be more proud of the athletes, staff and representing VSU at the highest level of collegiate competition.”
 
The VSU women's team entered the meet with a ranking of 25^th in the country, they finished tied for 16^th in the Nation.
