Petersburg, VA - In the first semifinal match of the day, Chowan, the second seed in the tournament, swept the doubles to take a commanding 3-0 lead before finishing with the 5-1 win to improve their record to 13-15. With the loss, Virginia State, the third seed, falls to 6-8 on the year.
All three doubles matches were close as Pedro Aiala and Danilo Galovic defeated
Matthew Brown and Nicolas Pfab 8-5 at number one doubles. The number two doubles tandem of Sasha Kirsanov and Ivan Doubograev downed
Evan Dirksen and
K'Wmane Tonkins 8-6.
Scott Van Eck and Jaqwese Williams completed the sweep with their 8-5 win over
Delwin McCurdy and
Denzel Harris 8-5.
Van Eck retired early from his match at number five singles, giving Virginia State their only point of the match. Soon thereafter, Tonkins retired with an injury, giving Chowan a 4-1 lead.
Number three singles Kirsanov gave the Hawks the win with his 7-5, 6-1 win over Dirksen.
